Keely leaned forward. “Bree, is there some way we can creep down and rescue Dev?”
This was the choice Bree dreaded. “I needed to make a trade,” she said. “I needed freedom to search for you. But I had to promise I would not run away.”
To Bree’s surprise Keely understood. The sister who had always darted this way and that, flitting like an elf between trees, put it straight.
“You’re right, Bree. You have to keep a promise.”
That settled it. From then on, they talked about ways to meet again and their hope for all three of them to be free.
When they went outside again, Bree helped Keely onto Flurry’s back. As though knowing she carried a precious load, the mare stepped carefully across the mountaintop and down the trail. As daylight crept upon the fjord, Bree left Keely as close as possible to the farm where she lived.
With tears in their eyes, they hugged each other good-bye. “Don’t forget our secret signal,” Keely said, reminding Bree to watch for pointer rocks. They would meet halfway between the two farms on the trail next to the fjord.
“Three nights from now,” Keely told her. Then, using Bree’s stick, she limped away.
When Bree was safely on the trail again, she stopped at a high point and looked across the deep blue waters of the fjord. A dusting of snow still lay on the top of the mountains. Off to Bree’s left the spray of a waterfall tumbled down a steep slope. As Bree watched the falling water, all that had happened to her seemed to fit into place.
She, Dev, and Keely had walked through hard days. No doubt there were more hard days to come. But now as Bree took a deep breath, the weight of all she had carried fell away. Lord, You have set my heart free!
For a time Bree stood there, unable to move on. Then she remembered. At the farm Mikkel would miss Flurry first. Then he’d miss her. She could be accused of stealing the horse.
At the beginning of the trail along the fjord, Bree slapped the mare’s rump. “Go on home.” Flurry turned her head, looked at Bree, then obeyed.
Walking quickly in the growing light, Bree followed her. This time the song she hummed was not for Grandmother or for Molly the cow. By now Bree knew it wasn’t her voice that counted most, but her grateful heart.
As she left the trail and passed the boathouse, Mikkel came outside. “You’re back,” he said.
“Yes, I’m back,” Bree answered.
“You could have kept going over the mountains. Why didn’t you?”
More than anything in her life Bree had wanted to rescue Dev and keep going. Couldn’t they somehow have managed? Regret filled Bree at the thought of it.
But then she met Mikkel’s gaze. “Because I promised.”
“You didn’t think about breaking that promise?”
Bree smiled. “Of course. With all my heart I wanted to break that promise.”
“I never would have seen you again.”
Bree heard the strangeness in Mikkel’s voice, then the wonder that she had stayed.
